Left Hand Brewing is majority employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), complemented by community ownership initiatives. Founder Eric Wallace leads the company. This structure supports a strong employee culture, community focus, and long-term independence.
The brewery originally used the name Indian Peaks but changed it after discovering it was already in use. The new name, Left Hand, honors Chief Niwot—“left hand” in Arapaho—whose tribe lived in the area.
Left Hand Milk Stout is brewed by Left Hand Brewing Company in Longmont, Colorado. The brewery is known for Milk Stout Nitro, among the first nitro beers in the United States, and is recognized as one of the larger American craft breweries.
An ESOP gives employees a direct stake in the business, improving engagement and retention. It supports succession planning, helps preserve independence, and can deliver tax advantages that enable more investment in brewing capacity, innovation, and market expansion.
Specialist advisors help evaluate capital options—like minority equity, credit facilities, or community raises—structure ESOPs, and guide partnerships or M&A. The aim is to secure the right funding, optimize the balance sheet, and scale distribution without compromising brand control or culture.
