What is a Beer Spa? Origin, What to Expect, & Services Explained

titleBlockImage

While beer spas have been around for many years, they’re new to the United States. If you’re wondering "What is a beer spa, anyway?" you’re in the right place.

In this guide, we'll answer your biggest questions, from "What is a beer spa?" to "How can I prepare for a spa day?" We'll teach you everyting you need to know when you visit a beer spa like Oakwell Beer Spa, so you can relax stress-free.

What is a beer spa?

Beer spas aren’t your standard day spa with manicures, pedicures, and facials. Instead, beer spas offer a unique beer-inspired spa experience where you can relax differently.

The first-ever beer spa opened in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, in 1981. Over time, beer spas became very popular in Europe. They've now expanded worldwide.

While all beer spas offer some type of bath infused with beer ingredients (and not actual beer), including hops and barley, each has a unique experience. For example, many beer spas in Prague offer a party vibe with hot tubs, while others are more focused on wellness.

Oakwell Beer Spa in Denver is one of the most relaxing places in Denver. Here, you can unwind in a private spa suite with a beer bath, infrared sauna, and rain shower. There's also a taproom that serves locally brewed craft beer and plenty of non-alcoholic options. Oakwell Beer Spa also has a Relaxation Lounge where guests can enjoy a Zero Gravity Massage experience.

Oakwell Beer Spa in Denver, Colorado, has elevated the original beer spa concept, as have traditional day spas around the world. The Oakwell Beer Spa experience is one-of-a-kind, with a cozy taproom oasis and day spa in a modern space.

Wellness treatments at Oakwell Beer Spa include the Beer Bath Hydrotherapy, Infrared Sauna, and Zero Gravity Massage.

Oakwell Beer Spa Services

Oakwell Beer Spa offers services that help you relax in new ways. What better way to enjoy your spa treatments than with a delicious craft beverage? While you’re enjoying your beer-inspired, relaxing spa services, you can also sip on a beer, kombucha, tea, cider, or wine.

Beer Bath Hydrotherapy

Kick back in a cedar hydrotherapy tub that’s filled with a blend of hops, barley, and herbs for the Beer Bath Hydrotherapy experience. Soaking in a bubbly beer bath offers many benefits, including smoother, more nourished skin, reduced muscle and joint pain, and decreased muscle tension.

Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna

Relax and detox your body as you soak up our full-spectrum infrared sauna’s healing heat. As your body temperature increases, you’ll begin to sweat and release toxins from within.

The Infrared Sauna is different from a traditional sauna because infrared waves heat the body from within and directly penetrate to the cellular level to raise your temperature, promoting sweating and detoxification. Because of this, infrared saunas are said to be more effective. Infrared saunas are also less steamy, causing less humidity than traditional saunas.

Zero Gravity Massage

Take a trip to space in our Relaxation Lounge, where you can enjoy a Zero Gravity Massage experience. The room is dark, with relaxing music playing, making it easy to unwind.

You’ll lie back in a high-tech massage chair that uses the latest robotics technology to give you a relaxing full-body massage. The experience offers health benefits such as reduced pain and soreness, improved flexibility, stress relief, and better posture.

Why You Deserve a Denver Spa Day

Everyone deserves time to unwind, and what better way to do it than at a spa? Not only is a spa day fun and relaxing, but spa treatments also have many wellness benefits, including stress and pain relief, better sleep, and reduced signs of aging.

A spa is also the ideal place to unwind with friends or have a romantic date with your significant other. Plus, there's beer!

What to Expect When You Visit Oakwell Beer Spa

When you’re going to the spa, you don’t often think of local craft beverages and beer therapy rooms. A spa day at Oakwell Beer Spa is unlike any other.

You can expect an inclusive environment, a unique experience, complete relaxation, and a cozy taproom.

An Inclusive Environment

Whether it’s your very first time pampering yourself at a day spa or not, you're welcome at Oakwell Beer Spa.

We’re breaking the stigma that spas are made for certain people. We believe everyone deserves to relax, so we’ve created a laid-back yet luxurious space where everyone feels comfortable.

Oakwell Beer Spa is the perfect place for men, women, and everyone in between. We welcome couples, friends, and the solo relaxer for any occasion—a celebration, a relaxed outing, or quality time.

A Unique Experience

Instead of your traditional spa treatments like manicures and pedicures, we offer special services in a unique space. How many people can say they’ve taken a beer bath or gone to a day spa that serves locally sourced craft beverages? You can after you visit Oakwell Beer Spa!

The Beer Therapy Room is Oakwell Beer Spa’s signature service. The room is private for up to two guests and has a beer bath, infrared sauna, relaxation deck, and rain shower.

You can also book multiple rooms if you’re enjoying a Denver spa day with a larger group. This is ideal for bachelor or bachelorette parties and birthday celebrations.

The Beer Therapy Room session lasts for 90 minutes with the following:

  • Sweat and detox in the sauna for 20 minutes
  • Take a cold shower to rinse off and get your blood flowing for a few seconds
  • Soak in a bubbly beer bath with your cold beverage in hand for about 40 minutes
  • Shower and check out the Beer Therapy Cosmetic Minibar and beer-infused shower products

Complete Relaxation

We promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage you to indulge in self-care in our relaxing space. For the best massage in Denver, Colorado, look no further than Oakwell Beer Spa’s Relaxation Lounge. Experience a Zero Gravity Massage in a space-themed room with four chairs separated by privacy curtains.

Zero Gravity Massage chairs use the latest robotics technology for a personalized full-body massage. Your massage can be 15 or 30 minutes long. A 15-minute treatment provides deep relaxation with a head-to-toe deep-tissue massage, while a 30-minute treatment offers a full-body massage with a stretching component to re-energize the body.

During your massage, your chair adjusts to a customized experience as you tilt back into a neutral, zero-gravity position, with your legs elevated above your heart for complete relaxation. Benefits include pain relief, improved posture, better circulation, and relief for tired feet.

You don’t need an appointment to enjoy the Relaxation Lounge unless you’re adding it to your Beer Therapy Room session. As a walk-in, massages are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

A Cozy Taproom

Oakwell Beer Spa’s taproom is a modern space with cozy vibes. Guests can hang out in the taproom before or after their appointment to enjoy drinks and relax.

The taproom is also open for visitors who don’t have an appointment for spa services, so you can stop in to check out the space and enjoy a drink (or a few) if you’d like. If you’re not into beer, you can enjoy wine, cider, kombucha, tea, and our other non-alcoholic options.

The best part? You can self-serve your drinks at your leisure! When you arrive at Oakwell, you’ll receive a double-insulated stainless steel tumbler and a card you can use to scan the drinks you want to try. What does a beer spa do for you?

A beer spa soak can nourish the skin and promote relaxation. Hops, barley, and brewer’s yeast supply B vitamins, amino acids, and antioxidants that may soothe irritation, soften skin, and support circulation. The warm bath and aromatics help reduce stress, ease muscle tension, and may improve sleep quality.

What to wear to a beer spa?

Wear a swimsuit. Most spas provide towels and robes, and some offer disposable swimwear. Bringing clean flip-flops or sandals is recommended.

How does the beer spa work?

You typically begin by soaking in a warm bath infused with beer ingredients such as hops, barley, and brewer’s yeast for a set period. After the soak, the tub is drained, you dry off, and many venues offer a follow-up massage using hop- or beer-inspired oils to extend the benefits of the treatment.

Is beer spa good for your skin?

The blend of brewer’s yeast, hops, barley malt, and hot water is designed to relax the body while nourishing the skin. These ingredients provide natural compounds that can hydrate and soften, gently exfoliate, support elasticity, and help clarify acne-prone areas. Individual results vary.

Does a beer spa use real beer or beer ingredients?

Most beer spas use warm water infused with hops, barley, and brewer’s yeast, sometimes with a small amount of beer for aroma. You are not soaking in carbonated beer; the focus is on the beneficial botanicals and nutrients from brewing ingredients.

How long does a beer spa session last and what's typically included?

Sessions commonly run 45 to 90 minutes and may include a private hop- or yeast-infused bath, time to relax, and optional add-ons such as a sauna, salt room, or massage. Many venues offer a beverage during the soak and provide towels and robes; specifics vary by spa.

How is a beer spa different from a traditional day spa?

While all spas focus on wellness, beer spas also include beer therapy for a unique spa day twist.

At Oakwell Beer Spa, we combine a day spa and a taproom into one. Not only do we serve local craft beer, but we also serve other beverages for those who want something different.

We also infuse our beer baths with a seasonal herbal blend with beer’s main ingredients, hops and barley – kind of like a giant beer tea that you get to soak in.

Is bathing in beer good for you?

There are many benefits of bathing in beer. Beer ingredients, hops and barley, have vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that are excellent for your hair and skin.

People have been taking beer baths for centuries to reap benefits like anti-aging, pain relief, relaxation, and better sleep.

What is the most relaxing spa treatment?

We might be biased, but we think beer baths are the most relaxing spa treatment. Soaking in a bubbly, beer-infused bath is a great way to melt away stress. To take the relaxation up a notch, kick back in a Zero Gravity Massage chair for a deep-tissue massage that targets the whole body.

Is a beer spa better solo or with a group?

Oakwell Beer Spa’s signature service is for up to two people. You can also book a Garage Party for up to two people or rent the space for a larger party.

Are there gift cards available?

Absolutely! A visit to Oakwell Beer Spa is the perfect gift for anyone and allows your gift recipient(s) to enjoy spa treatments, add-on services, beverages from the taproom, and retail products.

Gift cards can be purchased for $1 to $2,000 and can be used for one or multiple appointments. Check out our recommendations for the best amount, depending on the experience you want to gift.
