A Guide to Spa Etiquette: Useful Tips for First Time and Regular Goers

Are you in need of a spa day? Visiting the spa is the perfect way to recharge and pamper yourself. Whether you're a spa newbie or you've been a few times, it's always helpful to know spa etiquette tips that can help you get the ultimate spa day experience. It's important to remember that different spas may do things differently, so it's best to check with your spa on specific regulations and tips. With that said, this guide will share helpful tips, from what to wear to how to relax, to help you get ready to enjoy your next day at the spa.

Before Going to a Day Spa: At-Home Prep Tips

A successful spa day starts in the comfort of your own home! Knowing things like what to wear to the spa will ensure you look like a regular spa-goer, even if it's your very first time.

Book your spa day in advance.

Not only does this help you plan accordingly, but it helps the spa prepare for you to have the perfect visit! Many spas book out far in advance. Make sure you can visit the one you want at the time you prefer by booking beforehand. Most spas have the option to book online, which makes it even easier! And, if you need to cancel, do so at least 24 hours in advance if possible. This allows for someone else to book in your place and gives you the opportunity to reschedule for a time that suits you best. Be sure to check with your spa for their specific cancellation policy.

Contact the spa about any allergies or medical conditions.

After booking your spa day, this is a good time to give the spa a heads up if you have any allergies or medical conditions. This allows them to make any adjustments if needed to ensure you have an incredible experience. On that note, if you do have a medical condition, you should also consult your doctor to see which spa treatments are safe for you.

Dress comfortably.

Spa-goers almost always wonder what they're supposed to wear. It's an important question because it does set the tone for your spa day experience.  Depending on the type of spa you're visiting, you may wear a bathing suit, or you may fully undress for your spa treatment. Always check with the spa first to be sure. As for shoes, you don't want to wear your everyday shoes into the spa room. Most spas will provide you with cozy, clean slippers to wear.

Shower before your spa treatments.

Again, showering in advance is a spa etiquette that will depend on what kind of spa services you're getting. For example, if you've scheduled an appointment with a massage therapist, you'll probably want to shower before you go. Some spas will have a shower available to use when you arrive. This is great for those who may be coming straight from work or running errands. If you visit a place like Oakwell Beer Spa, you'll have access to your very own rain shower.

Remove skincare products.

Removing skincare products allows you to get the most of your experience and all the therapeutic benefits from your spa treatments like a sauna.

Find out about add-ons.

You may do this before your appointment by checking the spa's website, or you might do this when you get to the spa. You can often take your spa day up a notch with add-ons.  For example, you may get a pedicure and want to add on a foot mask. At Oakwell Beer Spa, we offer add ons like a charcuterie box or a CBD bath bomb.

Once You're There: Before Your Spa Treatment Tips

When it's finally time for some pampering and you're heading to the spa, there are some spa etiquette tips to keep in mind.

Arrive early.

It's always good to arrive early for your appointment. This allows you to fill out any paperwork and prepare for your spa services. Some spas may have skincare products for you to check out or beverages for you to enjoy. To get your full experience and feel prepared to relax, plan to arrive about half an hour early.

Ask questions.

At check-in, it's always good to ask any lingering questions. You want to feel entirely comfortable for your spa experience and so do the spa staff members. No question is too small when it comes to your peace of mind!

Prepare to unplug.

One of the best parts about a spa visit is that you get to get away for a little while! Some spas will ask that you stash your cell phone away for your treatments, and others won't mind if you use it. You can always check when you arrive. One of the more important spa etiquette tips is to try not to make loud phone calls in a space where other spa visitors are relaxing.

During Your Spa Treatment Tips

The good thing about spa services is you really don't have to do much! Your main goal is to kick back and unwind. But, here are a couple of spa etiquette tips to keep in mind during your treatments.

Be mindful.

During your spa day, it's essential to be mindful of other spa-goers and the staff. Make sure you follow the rules when it comes to nudity, noise, etc. All spas are different in terms of expectations, so be sure you're aware of these. Pretty much every spa likes customers to use a gentle spa voice, especially in relaxation areas!

Relaxing is number one at the spa! Silence is rare in today's world and most spas create a tranquil environment where guests can be in peace. Because of that, it's hard not to relax! Once You're Finished: After Your Spa Treatment Tips

When you've finished up your day at the spa, there are a few more etiquette tips to be aware of.

Don’t forget to be kind to your own body! In fact, you should hydrate before, during, and after your treatment. Many spa services such as a sauna and massage remove toxins from your body and can cause dehydration. To reap all the benefits from your experience, it's important to make sure you drink plenty of water.

Leave a tip.

Spa tip etiquette varies depending on where you are in the world and what spa you're visiting. Some accept gratuity, some don't, and some include it in the cost of the service. This is always something you can look into before your spa day to be sure you know what to expect. In the United States, most spas are grateful to receive a gratuity for their hard work. You can usually leave your tip to show your appreciation at the end of your services.

Things to Know About Oakwell Beer Spa Etiquette

While Oakwell Beer Spa is unique from traditional day spas, we do have similar etiquettes. With that said, our Beer Therapy Rooms are all yours for 90 minutes. This is where you can enjoy each spa treatment in a private space. This privacy allows you to feel fully comfortable during your spa day and wear whatever you'd like or nothing at all! And, since we're a taproom and spa combined, be sure to arrive early to learn about our self-serve beer wall. We also serve wine, cider, and non-alcoholic beverages! At Oakwell Beer Spa, you can enjoy your drink before, during, and after your services. If you need to refill while you're in your Beer Therapy™ Room, we offer bathrobes for you to throw on so you can head to the taproom to fill your insulated, stainless steel tumbler (provided by us!). We also have a ring bell system if you’d like to order drinks to be brought to you. The only place we ask you not to take your drink is to the relaxation lounge, where you can enjoy a full-body massage in a Zero Gravity Massage chair. Once you’re finished with your spa services, you can check out our Beer Therapy Minibar and beer-infused shower products to use in the rain shower. Then, our Vanity Room provides the perfect space for you to get ready if you need to!
