What Is a Beer Spa? Its Origin, What to Expect & Services Explained

Are you interested in a unique spa day experience? If so, let’s talk about a beer spa! We know you might be thinking  – but, what is a beer spa? In short, it's a place where you can relax differently. A beer spa is a type of day spa that dates back hundreds of years, although it isn’t your standard day spa where you go for manicures, pedicures, and massages. Instead, it’s a spa that incorporates beer, both for wellness services and to drink.

What exactly is a beer spa?

Let’s look more into what beer spas really are! While they’re similar to your traditional spa experience in some ways, they offer a different kind of relaxation where beer is incorporated, both for drinking and relaxing.

History of Beer Spas

Beer spas have been a part of Eastern European culture for centuries. The first beer bath recorded dates back to 921. King Wenceslas, the Duke of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) had his servants prepare him cold brewery baths with wort from the nearby abbeys.  It’s been believed for many years that the ingredients in beer, namely hops and barley, can provide many health benefits. Using these ingredients topically can decrease the appearance of wrinkles, release toxins in your body, moisturize your skin, and nourish your hair.  Today, you can actually find many beer spas in the Czech Republic, especially in Prague. These beer spas are mostly party-oriented where friends get together for a good time in an all-you-can-drink environment with a bed of hay to relax in after your bath.

FAQ

We know many people aren’t familiar with beer spas so here are some answers to common questions!

How is a beer spa different from a traditional day spa?

Traditional spas, like day spas, medical spas, destination spas, and hotel spas, offer various skincare and wellness treatments. And, so do beer spas! But, we also incorporate beer. At Oakwell Beer Spa, we combine a day spa and a taproom into one. Not only do we serve locally sourced craft beer, but we serve other beverages for those who aren’t into beer. We also infuse our beer baths with a seasonal herbal blend that has hops and barley – kind of like a giant beer tea that you get to soak in!

Is bathing in beer good for you?

Yes! In fact, people have been taking beer baths for centuries. Hops and malted barley, the main ingredients in beer, are packed with vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. Learn more about Beer Bath Hydrotherapy wellness benefits here!

What is the most relaxing spa treatment?

We might be biased, but we think beer baths are the most relaxing spa treatment. Soaking in a bubbly, beer-infused bath is a great way to melt away stress. To take the relaxation up a notch, kick back in a Zero Gravity Massage chair for a deep-tissue massage that targets the whole body.

How do you prepare for a spa day?

The most important part of preparing for a spa day is that you’re ready to unwind! Here are some top tips to ensure you have the ultimate, stress-free experience.
  • Book your appointment. Oakwell Beer Spa offers 24/7 online booking!
  • Let the spa know if you have any allergies or medical conditions.
  • Arrive for your appointment early. Come 30 minutes early so you can relax in the taproom and pour yourself a beverage.
  • Decide what to wear. You can wear whatever makes you comfortable in your Beer Therapy™ Room! It can be your birthday suit or your bathing suit, but we do recommend letting your skin breathe as much as possible for the sauna and beer bath.
  • Hydrate! Drinking water before spa services, especially a sauna, allows you to better enjoy your experience as these can be dehydrating. Then, of course, hydrate with a beverage from our taproom when you arrive.

What to expect at a spa that offers beer baths?

At Oakwell Beer Spa, you can expect a unique relaxation experience! Our Beer Therapy™ Rooms are where you’ll soak in your beer bath. Each room is completely private for you to enjoy solo or with a friend. In your room, you’ll have a cedar hydrotherapy tub, a full-spectrum infrared sauna, a rain shower, and a relaxation deck.  You’ll have 90 minutes to enjoy your Beer Therapy™ Room using the amenities at your leisure. We recommend detoxing in the sauna for 20 minutes, taking a cold shower to keep your blood flowing for a few seconds, then relaxing in your beer bath for about 40 minutes. After your bath,  you have about 20 minutes to shower while checking out our Beer Therapy™ Cosmetic Minibar and beer-infused shower products.

Is a beer spa better solo or with a group?

You can enjoy it any way you’d like! At Oakwell Beer Spa, you can book your Beer Therapy™ Room for yourself, with a friend, or you can have a spa party.   Interested in learning more about beer spas? Check out more FAQs!
